Hawks drop close match to UNB

(ST. JOHN'S, NL.)—The UNB Reds defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 33-31, 15-25) on Friday night from The Field House in St. John's.

The Hawks and Reds traded points throughout an exciting opening set, but it would be UNB who handled the pressure a little better to take the set 25-23.

UNB used that momentum to earn a 25-21 second set edge over Memorial. The Hawks fought back late in the 2nd set, but were unable to make up the 9-point hole they dug for themselves.

The Hawks responded with a great effort in a marathon of a third set. Eventually taking the set 33-31, to get the home crowd fired up.

UNB regrouped nicely after losing the set, with their best set of the evening, defeating the Hawks 25-15 to take the match.

The Reds were led by Victoria Eadle who finished with a whopping 18 kills on .163 hitting and also tallied 20 digs. Adora Rooyakkers was a key contributor in the Reds victory finishing with 15 kills to go along with 17 digs.

Memorial got another fantastic performance from Katie Wagar who finished with 32 digs and seemed to be all over the court all match. Kaitlyn Kuchinka led the Hawks in kills with 11, while Claire Whiffen had some timely points, finishing with 8 kills on the night.

The second match of the 3-game weekend series will take place on Saturday night at 7:00pm NST at The Field House.
