Nita Chambers (Sutton) Awards Fund

About Nita Chambers Sutton

Nita Chambers (Sutton), a graduate of Stella Maris High School in Trepassey and Memorial Unversity was a spirited and talented participant in basketball at both scholastic and interuniversity levels. As a teacher in Plum Point and Conception Bay South she was a leader in student/community events and as an alumna she was a strong supporter of Memorial University. Nita passed away in 1999 and a number of her family, friends, colleagues and former instructors formed a committee to develop an endowment fund to support the granting of financial awards in her name. Through the efforts of this committee and the support of many businesses and individual donors for a variety of projects, the Fund Capital endowment has now reached over $71,000.

The Nita Chambers (Sutton) Awards Fund (Est. 2000) provides financial assistance to deserving male and female student athletes who are graduates of High Schools in Newfoundland and Labrador and who represent the Memorial University Sea~Hawks in the sport of basketball. Two awards, one to a member of each of the men's and women's varsity teams, are presented annually. The amount of these awards is dependent on the yearly accrued interest on the Fund endowment. Twenty-six awards totaling $29,000 have been provided since the inception of the Fund.
