Hawks fall to Huskies

HALIFAXNova Scotia. – The Saint Mary's Huskies picked up its eighth conference win of the season in AUS volleyball, after sweeping Memorial University 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-21) on Friday evening. The Huskies improve to 8-6 (16 points) on the season, while the Sea-Hawks fall to 0-13. 

How it Happened 

The first set began with SMU doubling up Memorial 4-2 early on and the Huskies continued their lead, up 10, 15-5 at the midway mark. The Huskies offence found a rhythm and took the first set by a score of 25-16.  

The Huskies carried the momentum from the first set into the second. Leading 10-6, the Huskies took 11 of the next 14 points to go ahead 21-9, before taking the set 25-10 

The final set began as another tight contest, tied 5-5 early on, but SMU's offence was relentlessSaint Mary's won the third and final set 25-21. 

High Powered Offense 

The Huskies offence was dominant all afternoon with four Huskies recording four or more kills. Sophomore Olivia Bell (La Have, NS) paced the offence, posting four digs, 11 kills, and hitting .786. RookieMegan Bruhm(Hubley, NS) tallied 10 kills and led the team with 21 total attacks on the evening 

Fifth-yearsJamie Rourke (Mission, BC) added seven kills and 13 digs while Emilla Conlon (Dartmouth, NS) had a team-high 29 assists and added four digs and two kills. Junior Bethany Smith (Moncton, NB) logged four kills and Senior Anna Watt (Calgary, AB) tallied two.   

Emily Batt (Grande Prairie, AB) paced Memorial with nine kills and Alyssa Warford (Corner Brook, NL) had four.

Both teams hit the road in two Atlantic University Sport games this weekend, as the Sea-Hawks travel to Dalhousie (13-0) on January 25 at 2:30 p.m. and the Huskies travel to Moncton SundayJanuary 26 at 2:00 p.m.
