Sea-Hawks shine at Kemp Fry Invitational

2022 Kemp Fry AUS Invitational November 28, 2022

 

HALIFAX, NS - The Seahawks shined this weekend at the 2022 Kemp-Fry AUS invitational hosted at Dal. The team brought a total of seven bronze, two silver, and four gold with the Women's and Men's swimming both bringing home 3rd place overall. 

The 4x200m Freestyle relays started out the weekend with Memorial's Men A-Relay team smashing an almost 40-year-old record set in 1983 with a time of 7:41.42 set by Matthew Whelan, Logan Palmer, Mostafa Zein and Thomas Chafe. The boys landed 3rd place not trailing far behind Acadia and Dalhousie men's teams. 

Moving into Saturday's swims, we had Matthew Whelan reach the U Sports qualifying standard in the 400m Individual medley, setting a team and provincial record with a time of 4:25.39 landing 1st place. Other notable swims of the day came from Heidi Perry with 3rd in the 100m Butterfly, Thomas Chafe bringing home gold in the 200m Freestyle, Ali Warren with 2nd in the 50m Backstroke and Memorial's Thomas Chafe, Logan Palmer, Dylan Morawski, and Matthew Whelan brought the Men's A-Relay to 3rd in the 4x100m freestyle relay setting a new provincial record of a 3:29.46 to end the day.  

Day 3 was off with an impressive swim from Heidi Perry in the 200m Butterfly bringing in a silver medal with a time of 2:24.31. Kate Williams showed more podium swimming with a 3rd place finish in the 100m Freestyle going a 58.88 and a 1st place finish in the 100m Backstroke. As well as Matthew Whelan claiming gold along with a team and provincial record in the 200m Individual Medley going a 2:05.24 and a silver in the 400m Freestyle going a 4:05.73. Thomas Chafe had a great swim as well placing 3rd in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:10.56. To wrap up the competition, Memorial's Kate Williams, Marcy Whelan, Heidi Perry and Kathryn Stokes brought home 3rd place on the A-Relay for the women's 4x100 Individual Medley.

This meet wraps up the 2022 year for Memorial's M/W Swim Team. Competition resumes after the holidays with the 2023 Subway AUS Swimming Championships which will be hosted here in St. John's, Newfoundland from February 10th to 12th.
