Coach English and the Memorial University women's basketball program are excited to announce the commitment of 5'9" wing Adriana Garcia Sanchez de Rojas from Madrid, Spain. Adriana currently plays for Club Baloncesto Torrelodones.
"We are thrilled to welcome Adriana to our team," said Coach English. "She brings a playing style that we believe will fit our program right away. Her feel for the game and high basketball IQ are impressive. Adriana's passing, her ability to score in multiple ways, and her toughness are all qualities we're really excited about for next season."
Adriana echoed Coach English's sentiment about her fit with the program:
"I believe I'm a good fit, as I play a similar style of game to what's played at Memorial. I think I can help the team with my court vision and hard-working style of play. I'm really excited for next season and the opportunity to compete in a strong conference and experience university basketball in Canada."
Coach English emphasized the importance of finding student-athletes who align with the program's values:
"When we recruit, we're looking not just for great basketball players, but for great students and great people. Adriana is very mature, has a great personality, and is an excellent student — all qualities that will help us maintain and build on the culture we're creating here."
Adriana is also enthusiastic about what Memorial University offers beyond the court:
"Memorial is an excellent academic institution where I can continue playing basketball. I believe this is a great opportunity for me to take my game to another level while enjoying the amazing experience of living in a new city."
Adriana is the third commitment to the women's basketball program for the upcoming season, joining local 6'0 forward Izzy White and 6'1 transfer post player Amelia Mitchell.
The women's basketball team opens their regular season at home against the St. FX X-Women on Friday, October 24th.
