UNB Earn Sweep Over Sea-Hawks

The UNB Reds (6-3) swept Memorial (3-7) in the first weekend series of the new semester.

The game started well for the Hawks, getting a quick two points off the tip. UNB didn't let this damper their efforts, as they forced themselves inside the paint, creating multiple opportunities for second-chance points. Eva Tumwine of the Reds led this charge with 7 points and 6 rebounds in the first half. The Reds held the lead 17-12 after the first quarter, and 38-32 at the half as well.

The Hawks shot 43% from the field in the first half. They were scoring effectively in transition, launched forward by Sydney Stewart's 11 points, who provided a valuable edge to the Hawks. Continuing her positive efforts, Hallie Nickerson led the Hawks in scoring after the first half with 14 points.

At the end of the second quarter, Sydney Stewart hit a deep buzzer beater; this shot spurred the Hawks on to a phenomenal third quarter, coming out blazing hot with a 16-3 run. Despite this fantastic quarter, the Hawks were unable to carry this momentum into the 4th and UNB would once again take the lead back.

The Hawks had to deal with foul trouble late, losing Brooklyn Wright and Sydney Stewart. UNB shot a fantastic 53% from the field in the final frame, nailing Memorial's coffin shut. Grace Simpson of the Reds had 10 in the final frame, supported by Ja'Yon Leak's 6 of 22 in the fourth. Leak earned herself player-of-the-game recognition.

For Memorial, they will be looking to find some positivity in the coming opportunities. They are currently on a five game losing streak. The Hawks will be facing Acadia away from the Fieldhouse next weekend, January 12th and 13th. The away games are available for live stream at austv.ca.
