Sea-Hawks outlast X-Women in tight battle

The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the StFX X-Women 61-58 in AUS women's basketball action from The Field House in St. John's, NL.

With less than 20 seconds to go in this game, with StFX down by 3, the X-Women missed three potential game tying shots and the Sea-Hawks were able to hold on to win. It seemed that this entire game was heading toward a crazy finish from the very beginning and the final minute did not disappoint.

With 1:08 to go in the 4th, Sydney Stewart hit a free throw that put the Hawks up 57-55. From there, all structure and semblance of order evaporated. X-Women co-leading scorer on the night Jessica Miller responded on StFX's next possession, nailing a deep three with the shot clock winding down.

Memorial would take a timeout and ultimately regroup, retaking the lead on a Rosie Stanoev layup. Stanoev, scored 9 in 4th quarter without missing any shots. She was 2 of 2 from the floor and 5 of 5 from the line. A Stewart free throw would put Memorial up by 3 and the X-Women were unable to recover.

Still, the X-Women put forth a brilliant effort in the loss, and helped treat those who braved the snow to one of the best basketball games all season. Miller was matched by Jamie McCarron, both dropping 13 for the visiting side.

For Memorial, Graciel Diaz-Brito had what was maybe her best game of the year tonight, with 12 points, 13 boards, and 4 assists. Sydney Stewart was the high scorer with 16 points.

These two teams will be back at it tomorrow at noon, where we hope we'll have another nail biter on our hands. Catch the game on AUStv.ca, or come down to the Field House for what will be a brilliant second act.
