The Memorial Sea-Hawks men's basketball program is thrilled to announce the addition of Azhyawn "Zhy" Downey, a dynamic 6'0 point guard from North Preston, Nova Scotia, for the 2025–26 season.
Downey joins Memorial from Auburn High School, where he was a standout on the court and collected a number of accolades, including Rookie of the Year in the Metro High School league, back-to-back team MVP awards in Grades 10 and 11, and twice being named a Metro League All-Star.
A product of the North Preston Bulls and a former member of U15 Canada Elite, Downey also represented Basketball Nova Scotia for three years — gaining valuable experience and making a name for himself as a leader and playmaker.
"I chose Memorial because I feel like they can bring the best out of me on and off the court," said Downey. "I'm mainly looking forward to helping bring the first AUS championship to Memorial, continuing to grow as a player, and making my teammates better along the way."
Downey plans to study Business at Memorial and brings a versatile skillset to the Sea-Hawks backcourt. Fans can expect an exciting brand of basketball every time he hits the floor.
"They can expect crafty buckets, high-level plays, and a point guard who works hard on defence and loves getting his teammates involved," Downey said.
Head Coach Ian Coultas is equally excited about the addition of Downey to the program.
"I'm excited to add Azhyawn Downey to our team next season," said Coultas. "Zhy is a dynamic point guard — gritty and skilled — exactly what we are looking for. I'm excited to get him to campus and watch him compete for a spot on the roster next season."
