Coach English and the Sea-Hawks women's Basketball program are excited to announce the commitment of Brooklyn Martens for the 2024-2025 season.
A 6'0 forward from Caronport, Saskatchewan, Martens played the last four seasons at Briercrest University in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). Last season, she averaged 12.5ppg, 7.3rpg and 2.0apg and was named a first team all-star in the south conference. Her team posted a record of 13-8 and would finish as bronze medalists in the ACAC for the second year in a row.
Her decision to join the Sea-Hawks comes as great news as Coach English continues to build the roster for the upcoming season.
"Brooklyn will be an incredible addition to our team for next season." said Coach English. "She is a multiple time all-star in the ACAC and her team has been very successful with her leading the way. Her ability to defend multiple positions and be a mismatch on the offensive side of the floor is exactly what we were looking for next season."
Memorial offers Brooklyn an opportunity to finish her eligibly and she says it was always a goal of hers to play in U-Sports and to move out East.
"Being Saskatchewan born and raised, it has been a dream of mine since high school to play basketball out on the east coast and to move farther than 2 blocks away from my parents. I thought my post-secondary career was over after playing four years at Briercrest college and completing my English degree. So, getting this opportunity to finish out my eligibility at Memorial while also being able to start my track into Education seems too good to be true. I'm excited to fully dive into what Newfoundland and Memorial University has to offer, and I've already been brushing up on my sea shanties!"
Brooklyn is known for her excellent work ethic and leadership. She brings a skillset that Coach English believes pairs really well with the AUS, and that her experience will be a major asset.
"Having graduated so much experience from our team last season, Brooklyn gives us that, having played 4 years in the CCAA. The ACAC conference is arguable the toughest in the CCAA, and we believe Brooklyn's game will translate really well to the AUS. We are eager to work with her this coming season and help her grow her game in her final year."
Martens becomes the 5th member of the Sea-Hawks women's basketball recuiritng class, following the previously announced additins of local standouts Ava Keating and Carly Norris, CEGEP transfer Naomie Chaperon-Ducé, and post Nicole Campbell.
Memorial will open the 2024-25 regular season at home vs the UPEI Panthers on Friday, November 1st. The team's entire regular season schedule can be found here.
