Duel sport star Jenkins commits to Memorial

Alyssa Jenkins, a Waterford Valley High student, will suit up for both the Sea-Hawks women's basketball and women's soccer teams for the 2020-2021 season. A midfielder on the turf, and a guard on the hardwood, the 5'9" St. John's native will study Business at Memorial.

On her decision, Alyssa says "I chose Memorial as the Sea-Hawks gave me the opportunity to play both varsity basketball and soccer, two sports I would never have been able to choose between. Memorial also gives me the opportunity to get a great education at home."

Jenkins is the first commitment for Coach English and the Women's Basketball program for 2020-2021 season. She has been a starter for her high school team all 3 years and helped lead the Warriors to back to back Hall of Fame Cups and was named Tournament MVP on both occasions. She has also represented her province as a member of the 2017 U15 NL provincial team. Most recently she played for the 2019 U17 Rock Elite team, who travelled to Langley, BC for Club Nationals.

English reveals "We are extremely excited to have Alyssa join our program. What stands out immediately is her competitive nature. Work ethic and desire to win are something we really look for when recruiting, and Alyssa demonstrates both of those characteristics. We are looking forward to get to work with her."

Her soccer resume is equally impressive, having been an annual member of the NLSA provincial team program, and the Whitecaps Academy Center. Jenkins has represented the St. John's Soccer Club winning provincial titles and competing at the national championships on several occasions.

Alyssa joins a significant recruiting class for Coach Power, and will play alongside her sister Kristen, a fellow midfielder on the women's soccer team.

She added "I can't wait to get started working with both coaches and my new teammates and certainly to be playing soccer alongside my older sister"

Coach Power notes "Alyssa is a terrific athlete, with great presence. She is a true box to box midfielder who can pitch in at both ends of the park. Her ability to be a duel sport athlete at the varsity level is impressive, and speaks to her dedication."

Sea-Hawks soccer will open their 2020 season at home on September 12th vs the Mount Allison Mounties.
