Memorial Sea-Hawks Women's Volleyball Home Opener

The Memorial Sea-Hawks (0-2) will battle the Saint Mary's Huskies (2-0) this upcoming weekend at home

In the Memorial Sea-Hawks volleyball season opener, they fell 3-0 to the UNB Reds on the road this past weekend. The first set was close, the two teams traded points until Memorial gained the lead 18-16 and then 22-19. The Reds were then able to rally and gained the set 25-23. The Red's then picked up the pace and won the next two sets 25-16 and 25-13. Taylar Johnston led the team with 6 kills and 4 blocks. Sarah Trowbridge led the game with 13 digs. Head coach Sydeny Purvis held her team to a high standard and has high hopes that her team will be able to prove themselves in the coming games. "I promise you the team you saw today is not the team I get every day in practice and it's just being able to get that team to show up here."

In the second game, the Reds' impressive passing allowed them to pull ahead and gain the first two sets 25-14 and 25-11. The Sea-Hawks then found their footing in the third set. The back and forth action created leads for both the Sea-Hawks and the Reds at times until the Reds managed to pull ahead nearing the end where they finished the final set 25-22. Maria Moores led the Sea-Hawks in kills in this game with 5 and Sarah Trowbridge with 12 digs.

Memorial will be hosting the Saint Mary's Huskies for their home opener. The Huskies are currently 2-0 where they defeated the Acadia Axe-Women twice last weekend.

"SMU is a strong team that has all of their players returning from last year. It will take a full group effort from us but everyone is very excited for the challenge" says head coach Sydney Purvis. The Sea-Hawks are a fairly young team looking to prove their skill. "Karen Greek has been doing an amazing job running our offense and finding us opportunities to score," says Purvis. The team also shines in the middle blocking position, "Both our middle blockers Halle Wirth and first year Taylar Johnston have done a great job being available for us and finding the floor" says Purvis.

The Sea-Hawks are hoping to find their first win of the season this weekend. Game times are Friday, November 3rd at 7 pm and Saturday, November 4th at 1 pm. Both games will take place at the Fieldhouse.
