Somers Fly's Solo to U Sports Championships

This weekend Sea-Hawks's swimmer and team captain Ally Somers heads to British Columbia to compete in the U Sports Swimming Championships.

The tournament begins today and runs until February 23 and is hosted by the University of British Columbia. Swimmers race preliminaries in the morning and the top 24 swimmers qualify for the finals in the evening.

Somers is the only athlete from Memorial who qualified to make the National Championships this year, and she hopes to make her University and Newfoundland community proud with her performance. Somers is in her fifth year of competing as a varsity swimmer she said qualifying for U Sports "has been her dream since Rookie year."

Somers came in 3rd in the AUS Championships for the Women's 50m Fly race. She expects to come close to or better than her personal best times in her races at U Sports and possibly qualify for a final in the 200 butterfly.

This is Somer's first time competing at U Sports individually, and she said ahead of the event "I'm pretty nervous, but I just have to rely on all the hard work I've done over the past few months and be confident going into my races."
