Hawks Fall to Cape Breton at Home

The Cape Breton Capers took the first game in the weekend series against the MUN Sea-Hawks, 68-65.

It was a great competition right from the opening tip. The Capers were able to get some early momentum off of Monique Calliste's contributions. Unfortunately, they had trouble keeping possession, allowing 13 turnovers in the first half. The Hawks had a lot of success earning hustle plays in the first half, pulling down 14 offensive rebounds.

The Hawks held the lead at the end of the half, 36-29. Monique Calliste's had 9 for the Capers. Alana Short has 12 for the Hawks.

The second half was a tough battle for the Hawks. They struggled to convert from the field, finishing the game shooting approximately 28%. They had even more struggle from deep, shooting 25%. It was uncharacteristic for the Hawks who are usually able to get out in transition. The Capers had other plans, however, putting the clamps on Memorial's fast pace.

The Hawks did have a great night rebounding, finishing with a total of 41 offense and defensive rebounds.

Despite the loss, there were positive performances for the Hawks. Hallie Nickerson had a double-double, posting 17 points and 10 rebounds. Alana Short and Jane Baird put up double digit points, 14 and 12 respectively.

For the Capers, Monique Calliste had a game-high 20 points and earned player-of-the-game commendations. This was a much needed win for the Capers who sit at 4-8 for the season. The Hawks will look to bounce back tomorrow and split the weekend series. All Sea-Hawk home games are available on austv.ca
