Hawks Overtaken in Three Sets

(ST. JOHN'S, NL.)—The Moncton Aigles Bleus were once again victorious in AUS women's volleyball, with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23) win on Saturday night from The Field House in St. John's. 

 

Memorial did well to score early points in the first set and take the games first lead, but Moncton would battle back quickly to tie the match 3-3 and then extend their lead to 7-3. The Hawks would gain some momentum behind a few miscues by Moncton, but the visitors regained their composure to take a 16-10 lead into the technical timeout. The Aigles Bleus would eventually take the set 25-17. 

 

Moncton would continue their strong play into the second set with a pair of early kills from Pascale Doiron and Christelle Bertin to help the Aigles Bleus gain an early 6-1 advantage. Memorial's Alyssa Warford did her best to respond, with a pair of kills herself, which would cut the lead to 7-5.  

 

The Aigles Bleus showed their offensive prowess throughout the second set, with Doiron, Bertin, and Ivana Urquhart taking turns attacking the Memorial defense. Each players registered multiple kills in the set, which kept the Hawks unbalanced on the defensive end. Moncton would close out the set by a score of 25-19. 

 

Moncton would complete the sweep of the Hawks with a 25-23 third set score, once again behind strong play from their attackers.  

 

Cassidy Martin dished out 28 assists, while also registering 7 digs in the victory. 

 

Despite the loss, Memorial got strong contributions from Alyssa Warford, who finished with 8 kills, 3 service aces, and 5 digs.  

 

Catherine Smith was another stand out for the Hawks, as she finished the match with 7 kills, 1 service ace, and a block. 

 

Moncton finished the match with a .191 hitting percentage, while the Sea-Hawks finished at .071. 

 

The final match of the 3-game weekend series will take place on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm NST at The Field House.
