Sea-Hawks Draw UPEI 1-1 in Home Opener

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks tied the UPEI 1-1 in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at King George V Field.

The first half started out with Maria Mackey (St. John's, NL) firing a shot from outside the box in the 4th minute, which was saved by UPEI goalkeeper Alison Muise (Charlottetown, PEI). UPEI also produced a shot in the fourth minute from Tyffanie Bordage (Acadie Siding, NB). UPEI kept attacking and in the 9th minute Madison Hurley (Charlottetown, PEI) took a shot but she couldn't beat goalkeeper Sydney Walsh (St. John's, NL). In the 10th minute Maria Mackey had her second shot of the game, but this time the ball was shot wide. Nicole Torraville (St. John's) continued the Memorial attack, blasting a shot in the 23rd minute from outside the box, just missing the top shelf.

UPEI's Andrea Mahoney (Sydney, NS) opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a long-range shot, which rebounded off Memorial's goalkeeper Sydney Walsh and into the top corner. The first half of the match came to an end as UPEI took the lead 1-0.

Memorial came out of the break fighting, and had many more opportunities in the second half with shots coming from Rachel Kieley (St. Johns, NL), Nicole Torraville, Teri Murphy (Mount Pearl, NL), and Kate Hickey (Outer Cove, NL). Jenny Bent (CBS, NL) evened out the score in the 57th minute with a low and hard shot into the back of the net, beating keeper Ali Muise (Charlottetown, PEI). UPEI had only one shot on goal in the second half from Tyffanie Bordage in the 65th minute.

Overall, Memorial outshot UPEI with Memorial totalling 6 shots on target through the game, and UPEI with 5. Teri Murphy was the Subway Player of the Game, whose relentless grit and effort during the game was essential to her team's performance.

The Sea-Hawks will look to strengthen their attack and put in more goals against the UPEI Panthers tomorrow. Game time is 1:00pm tomorrow at King George V Soccer Field and can be seen on AUStv.ca.
