Hickey & Jenkins Commit to Memorial

Women's Soccer Program adds 2 local recruits for 2018 season

The Memorial Sea-Hawks women's soccer program is pleased to announce the signing of two local recruits for the 2018 season.  Kate Hickey (Outer Cover, NL) and Kristen Jenkins (St. John's, NL) will wear the red and white next season as members of the Sea-Hawks.

Kate Hickey

Kate Hickey, a grade 12 student at Gonzaga Regional High School, will add some scoring punch to the Sea-Hawks front line next season.  Hickey is a high-end athlete who has represented her province on multiple occasions with the NLSA Provincial program and the St. John's Soccer Club.  She was also a member of the 2017 Canada Games Soccer team, which competed in Winnipeg, MB last summer.

Sea-Hawks Head Coach Mike Power is very excited to have landed Hickey and believes she will have a big role when she starts her new journey as an AUS athlete next season.

"Kate is a tremendous athlete who is dangerous in the final 3rd, can run like the wind, and she has great competitiveness coupled with a winning mentality. She will definitely play a part in the regeneration of our attacking until in 2018"

Kate is a multiple sport athlete, who contemplated pursing opportunities outside the province, but felt that Memorial would be the best fit for her both academically and athletically.

"I am very excited about attending Memorial in the fall and being part of the Sea-Hawks soccer program.  I look forward to training with the team and working with Coach Power to become a better player so I can help contribute to the team in any way I can while attending university to achieve my academic goals. To be able to join such a strong soccer program, with players I have played with and against the last few years, while attending a strong academic university made Memorial the right choice for me."

Hickey is following in her mother's footsteps (Denise Hickey (nee Whitten)) who played with the Sea-Hawks in 1994 and 1997, and was named an AUAA 1st Team All-Star.

Kristen Jenkins

Kristen Jenkins, a grade 12 student at Waterford Valley High School, will add depth to the Sea-Hawks midfield next season and is known for her versatility on both ends of the pitch.  Jenkins was also a member of the 2017 NL Canada Games team, which makes her the 7th player from that team to join the Sea-Hawks. She has represented her province on both the provincial and club levels and she was recently named the 2017 St. John's U17 Most Valuable Player.  Coach Power is excited to see Jenkins in the red and white next season and believes she adds stability and scoring to next year's team.

"Kristen is powerful defensive minded midfielder who has an excellent passing range, a very good understanding of the game, and can even pitch in with a few goals from distance. She'll bring even more stability to our already strong defensive core, and also open up options for me in terms of personnel and positions."

Kristen looks forward to joining the team next season and is excited about getting the chance to compete in the AUS, while playing in front of her family and friends.

"Memorial University and Sea-Hawks soccer was the best choice for me because I have the opportunity to get a great education while getting to play with a very talented group of girls. I'm very fortunate to be able to do so at home with my family and friends. I also look forward to working with Coach Power and working on improving myself. I can't wait to attend Memorial and be a positive part of this team."
