Last Games Before the New Year on Home Court

Last Games Before the New Year on Home Court

The Memorial Sea-Hawks Women's basketball team (3-5) will face the Cape Breton Capers (4-3) at home this upcoming weekend for the last home games before the new year.

The Sea-Hawks split last weekend with the Acadia Axe-Women walking away with a win and a loss. In the first game, the Sea-Hawks pushed through to win the first quarter 22-20 but could not find more than 17 points in each of the following quarters to end the game 81-73 for the Axe-Women. Game point leader was Sea-Hawks own Alana Short who boasted an impressive 29 points. Sea-Hawks Hannah Green held a strong game, grabbing 13 out of Memorials 41 rebounds.

The second game held better results for the Sea-Hawks. Memorial led the game by 10 after the first quarter and by 13 at half. The Axe-Women upped their game but could not outscore their opponents and the game ended in a 81-61 win for Memorial. Alana Short led the team in points once again with 20 and also led the team with 6 assists. Hannah Green held the only double-double of the game with 19 points and 14 rebounds. The Sea-Hawks were dominant off the boards, collecting 51 rebounds to the Axe-Women's 27. They also netted 19 second chance points to Acadias 2.

Up next, the Sea-Hawks will face the Cape Breton Capers who currently sit one place ahead of the Sea-Hawks in the standings. The Capers last game was a win against the league's top team, the UNB Reds. This game gave the Red's their first and only loss so far this season and the Capers will be looking to build off of this momentum. The Capers have an extremely young team with 7 first years on the roster and only one player in their 4th year of eligibility. Kiyara Letlow leads the Capers and the league in points per game hosting an impressive 20. She also leads the league in offensive, defensive, and total rebounds, grabbing a total of 118 balls. Another notable player from the Capers is Chermensa van la Parra who has netted 119 total points, averaging 17 points a game.

Memorial is home to the league's second total point scorer, Alana Short who has 141 points, giving her 17.6 points per game. Short also hosts other impressive stats such as being second in the league for free throws, netting 41 out of 48 attempts. Sea-Hawks Hannah Green has also been a critical player for both the Sea-Hawks offensive and defensive efforts. She holds multiple double-double games, posting strong numbers through points and rebounds. Green falls before Short for total overall points, netting 97 with Rebecka Ekstrom behind her with 92. Green and Short both have 57 rebounds each, helping each other to some impressive numbers for their team.

Head to the fieldhouse this Friday and Saturday to catch the last games of the semester where the Sea-Hawks will battle the Capers.
