Hawks Drop Weekend Opener vs. Panthers

(ST. JOHN'S, NL.)—The UPEI Panthers (16-3) defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks (13-6) on Friday, February 21st, at the Field House in St. John's.  
 
The Panthers came out of the gate quickly, holding a 35-22 lead after the 1st quarter.

The Sea-Hawks answered back in the 2nd quarter, cutting the lead to 39-31 halfway through the quarter. Haille Nickerson led the Sea-Hawks at halftime with 12 points. The Panthers were led by Jenna Mae Ellsworth, who had 20 points. The half ended with the Panthers leading 49-34. 

The Panthers came out strong again in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 22-16. The Panthers held a 71-50 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Sea-Hawks battled hard to start the 4th quarter, putting up 10 points in the first 3 minutes of play. They outscored the Panthers – in the 4th, but fall

The Panthers were led by Reese Baxendale and Jenna Mae Ellsworth, who both finished with 32 points. Lauren Flemming led the Panthers with 11 rebounds, while Reese Baxendale added 7 assists which led the team.   

Memorial was led by Haille Nickerson, who notched 25 points and broke the Sea-Hawks single season point record. Sammi Deakin-Sharpe and Alana Short were next in line with 13 and 11 points respectively. Haille Nickerson also led the Sea-Hawks with 8 rebounds.

The second match of the 2-game weekend series will take place on Saturday afternoon at 12:00pm NST at The Field House.
