Hawks Top Reds In Home-Opener

The Hawks came away with a win in their first regular season game against the UNB Reds, 67-49.

The Hawks opened up the 2019 regular season with a solid first half. Their trademark high-pressure defense and fast break offense. Hallie Nickerson (#23) led the Hawks in the first half with 9 points, shooting 3/4 from the free-throw line. Jolianne Guay (#33) contributed 7 for the Reds in the first half.

Both teams struggled to convert from the field, shooting under 40%. The tough defense and physical play led to plenty of opportunities from the line. Memorial made the most of their opportunities, missing just one attempt from the line in the first half. The Reds major flaw for the first half was their turnovers – 18 in the first 20 minutes of play. Memorial made these mistakes matter, scoring 10 points off turnovers.

The Reds started the third with solid effort, but the Hawks weathered the storm and maintained their lead. The fourth was excellent for MUN, giving the Reds only 9 points in the final frame. The Hawks clamped down on defense and saw the dividends on offense. MUN had very balanced scoring in their first outing, Sammi Deakin-Sharpe (#24) leading the way with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Deakin-Sharpe also earned player-of-the-game commendations. MUN will look to sweep the weekend series against UNB tomorrow. All Sea-Hawks home games are available online at austv.ca
