Hawks Score a Comeback Win Over Capers

The Memorial Sea-Hawks were able to earn a weekend split with the Cape Breton Capers with a 84-76 Monday morning victory at The Field House.

Coming back after a tough loss yesterday, Memorial was looking to get back in to their fast-paced game style; the Capers had other plans. CBU started the game on a 6-0 run. Despite this strong start, Memorial kept their composure and managed to improve on yesterday's struggles. The Hawks shot 35% from the field, an improvement but not where the Sea-Hawks need to be statistically.

CBU applied a strong zone defense that Memorial struggled to attack. CBU also struggled from the field. Despite this, the Capers held a lead through the first half, 26-21 after the first, 38-36 at the half.

Jane Baird of the Hawks had 10 at the break, Valentina Primossi of the Capers had 9. Scoring has been balanced across both teams once again.

The half-time break seemed to revitalize the Sea-Hawks, as they came out in the third quarter and put up a scorching 32 points. Memorial finally found a successful zone attack that got them looks close to the basket. The Hawks finally improved their shooting from the field, with a strong 61%., and 57% from three-point land. The final quarter was competitive with emotions flaring on both sides.

After their sluggish start returning from the break, Memorial seems to have returned to their fast-paced, cohesive, mentality of success. Four of the five Sea-Hawks starters put up double-digit points (Baird, Taylor, Wright, Stewart); Sydney Stewart (who they missed in their first game of the weekend) returned to put up 20 points to get her player-of-the-game commendations.

Hannah Brown of the Capers was dominant in the post this weekend, posting another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

After this split series, Memorial is looking ahead to their next series against Dalhousie, who currently stand 2-6 on the season, on January 12th and 13th. The weekend series will be available on AUStv.ca starting on Friday night.
