Alana Short who hails from Barrie, Ontario and attends Innisdale Secondary School, has committed to Coach Mark English and the Women's basketball program for the 2018-2019 season.
Alana has been identified in the Top 50 in Ontario girls' basketball through Grade 9-11 and just last week was named to the Canletes Ontario High School All Star Game, which is being held this Saturday, December 16th. Here are just some of her athletic and academic achievements:
· Athlete of the Year (Grade 8, 9, 10 and 11)
· Barrie Royals Basketball MVP (Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)
· Georgian College Basketball MVP (Grade 9 and Grade 11)
· JUEL Prep Basketball All-Star Selection (Grade 9 & 10 years)
· Simcoe County Senior Basketball All-star selection (Grade 11 & 12 years)
· Provincial Basketball High School All-star selection (Grade 11 & 12 years)
· Identified in the top 50 for basketball in Ontario (Grade 9-11)
· Honor Roll Grades 6-11
· Chosen by staff & students as Valedictorian for Grade 8 Graduating Class
Coach English feels Alana will be looked upon to step in and help the program next season.
"We are really excited to have Alana commit to our program. Alana is a very good student on top of being an incredible basketball player, which is what our program is looking for in order to build on our success for years to come. She is a 5'11 guard who brings a very solid overall skill set. Her ability to score the basketball and guard multiple positions, will really help our program next season and for the next 5 years. Memorial just felt right for Alana when it came time to make her decision on where she would attend University to pursue her academic and athletic goals.
"I am so excited to be a Sea-Hawk. When I visited Memorial in early October, the girls and coaches welcomed me with open arms and made me feel so comfortable. I chose to continue my athletics and academics at Memorial because of the academic program and support it offers me, as well as the competitive nature of the women's basketball team. I really like Coach English's coaching style and I think he can push me to improve and reach my goals. Special thanks to my family members, teammates, and coaches who have always supported me and encouraged me during my basketball career and helped me reach my post-secondary goals." - Alana Short
She is excited not only to commit to Memorial for academic and athletic reasons, but also because she has family in Newfoundland. Her dad is originally from St. John's and she comes from a very athletic family. Both her uncles are Men's Basketball alumni, having played back the 70's.
"Having relatives in St. John's is an added bonus and I look forward to having a cheering section at the Sea-Hawk's games."
Alana plans to study a Bachelor of Arts with a focus in Law and Society.
