Hawks Complete Sweep of X-Women

Hawks Complete Sweep of X-Women

The Memorial Sea-Hawks completed the weekend sweep of the StFX X-Women with a 73 to 58 victory on Sunday afternoon at The Field House.

Both teams got off to hot starts from three-point line in this one, which was a shootout in the first half. StFX got off to a 4 of 8 start from beyond the arc, while Memorial was 5 of 11. In that first half Brooklyn Wright, who went off for 27 against the Huskies on the last home stand, was the high woman early with 14.

The 3rd quarter saw the Sea-Hawks begin to pull away, outscoring the X-Women 22-10 in the frame. Graciela Diaz-Brito continued her outstanding play today as well, taking over in the 4th quarter. She dropped 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in the final frame, helping the Sea-Hawks secure the sweep.
The Hawks showed today that they can consistently play a complete game. While the X-Women hung around all afternoon, even leading after the first half, the Sea-Hawks were able to clamp down defensively and put a stop to any hope of a comeback. They held StFX to a meager 20 second half points, no doubt the kind of defensive effort coach Mark English has been looking for.
On the losing side, the X-Women seemed to run out of gas late. After yesterday's wild finish, and a strong opening half, they were unable to keep up. Still, this has to be considered a step forward for the X-Women. Despite the back to back losses, they looked dominant in stretches against what is turning out to be a very talented Memorial squad.
Holly Scott was the points leader for the X-Women, with 18. Chelsea Provo also had a nice game, dropping 13. On the Sea-Hawks side, it was Diaz-Brito's 19 leading the way, with Brooklyn Wright and Sydney Stewart both adding 14.
The Sea-Hawks are off next weekend, but head to Halifax on February 3rd to battle the Dalhousie Tigers.
