Sea-Hawks drop final match at interlock

(Halifax, N.S.)  The Montreal Carabins defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-22) in AUS-RSEQ men's volleyball interlock at Dalhousie University.

Memorial had a slight lead early in the first and trailed by one at the technical timeout. From there, they traded points with Montreal until the Carabins pulled ahead on solid serving by Godefroy Veyron-Trudel (Quebec, Q.C.), taking the set 26-24.

In the second set, Montreal controlled the pace of play, leaving the Sea-Hawks scrambling to put together point runs to catch up. The Carabins improved to 2-0 in the match with a 25-20 set win.

Veyron-Trudel had another great serving performance in the third, helping the Carabins to an early lead. Scott Holmgren (Fernie, B.C.) answered with some solid serving of his own, triggering a three-point run by the Sea-Hawks to get within two down the stretch. Montreal dug in to fend of the Sea-Hawks' advance, winning the third and final set 25-22.

Olivier Riopel (Gatineau, Q.C.) led the attack for Montreal with a match-high 14 kills and added nine digs, while Veyron-Trudel chipped in 10 kills of his own.

Memorial's Liam Power (Lower Sackville, N.S.) had 10 kills and five digs in the effort.

Sherbrooke finished the weekend with a 1-2 record, while Memorial went 0-3. Both teams are back in action next week as Montreal heads to Laval and Memorial will head to Fredericton, N.B. to take on UNB.
