Sea-Hawks welcome UNB for weekend set

The Memorial Sea-Hawks men's volleyball team will play their first home games of the season versus the UNB Varsity Reds this weekend at The Field House.

The Sea-Hawks are currently winless on the season with a 0 and 5 record, after being swept last weekend by the Dalhouse Tigers.  UNB opened the season with a victory defeating Sherbrooke in AUS-RSEQ interlock play, but dropped their next two matches and sit on a 1 and 2 overall record.

Memorial will be lead by Jordan Murray and Liam Power, who have gotten out to hot starts.  Murray is currently third in the AUS in kills with 49, while Power is in fourth with 40.

For the Sea-Hawks to be victorious they will need to slow down Varsity Reds outside hitter Eivind Andersen, who was the 2015 AUS MVP and currently leads the leagues in kills per set with a 3.8 average.

The Sea-Hawks are only home for four matches this season, which according to Head Coach Cisco Farrero means his squad needs to be ready to take advantage of the home support.

"With the AUS-RSEQ's having an unbalanced schedule it means that home matches are a premium and we need to take advantage of that. We travel a lot and our program stresses being able to compete in any environment but it is paramount that we then take advantage of having matches on campus at MUN."

As for UNB, Farrero knows they are a talented team, but feels his group will be ready to compete this weekend.

"UNB is a big, physical and experienced opponent and in order for us to be successful we need to do a better job of getting them out of system than we did versus Dalhousie this past weekend. Men's U Sports volleyball is won or lost on the ability to play in-system on your side and keep your opponent out of system on the other side of the net. That is the formula this weekend and going forward."

The Sea-Hawks and Varsity Reds will play their first match on Saturday night at 7:30pm, followed by a rematch on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm. All games will be played at The Field House and tickets are available at the ticket office.  Games will also be webcast live on www.AUStv.ca.
