Sea-Hawks Host Huskies in Old Gym

Sea-Hawks Host Huskies in Old Gym

The Memorial men's basketball team will play a home game on Sunday, January 20th to make up for a game that was postponed earlier in the season on November 10th due to a power outage. This game will see the undefeated Saint Mary's Huskies come to town for one game. The teams will face off in the Memorial University Physical Education building gymnasium, more commonly known as the Old Gym, which has not hosted a men's basketball game in many years.

The Sea-Hawks come into this game after dropping two games on the road to the Acadia Axemen. The Hawks sit at 3-8 on the season and are led by 3rd year forward Nathan Barker who is averaging 20.2 points per game, and 1st year forward Emanuel Ring who is averaging 18.8 points per game. Barker and Ring are 2nd and 3rd in the league in points per game respectively.

The Huskies have an impressive record of 9-0 this season, and are led by a balanced group of scorers, with four players averaging 11.8 points per game or more. They are led by 2nd year guard Johneil Johnson, who is averaging 14.8 points per game, and 5th year guard Kemar Alleyne, who is averaging 13.6 points.

Memorial will have to slow down the hot offense of the Huskies, which is averaging 87.2 points per game compared to the Hawks 75.9 points per game. Along with playing good defense, they will have to rebound well against the Huskies, who average 6.6 more rebounds per game than the Sea-Hawks.

First year guard James Wiseman, when asked about the teams mentality for the upcoming game against Saint Mary's, said "Coming off two losses last weekend, we're looking to come back strong and try to get a win against the Huskies. A strong performance against the number one team in the league would be good for the standings and a good confidence booster as we are trying to clinch a playoff spot."

Wiseman also added that the team is excited to play in the Old Gym, and noted that the energy in the gym will feel much more energetic than the field house because of the smaller atmosphere. "A lot of the guys seem excited to play in the Old Gym, with a lot of our practices being there, we should be comfortable playing there. The team is excited to play there, since it's smaller the energy will feel different and it'll feel more packed."
