Sea-Hawks move into 1st place in AUS

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks continued their winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 79-71 victory over the Cape Breton Capers in AUS men's basketball action.

The Sea-Hawks jumped out to an early lead on the Capers finishing the first quarter with an 18-13 advantage. 

Cape Breton would respond with a strong defensive effort in the second quarter, limiting the Sea-Hawks to just 11 total points.  The Capers would go into the halftime break with a 35-29 advantage.

The Capers looked poised to secure their first victory of the season going into the final quarter with a six-point advantage.  Cape Breton would extend that lead to 10 points with only 6:40 left in regulation.

The Sea-Hawks had no intention of disappointing the home crowd and responded with a 19-2 run and took the lead with 2:55 remaining in the game.

The Sea-Hawks were scorching hot in the final frame shooting 72.7% from the field and 75% (3/4) from the 3-point line to close out the game.

Cape Breton received a strong performance in the loss from Kenny Jean-Louis, who finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds.  Junior Moan-Matia also played well for the visitors, posting 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Austin Chambers played an efficient 29 minutes for the home side, finishing with 22 points, including going 5 for 8 from the outside.  Chambers also dished out 6 dimes and hauled down 4 rebounds.  Davion Parnsalu finished with a double-double, supplying 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  Deng Ring was a key reserve for the Sea-Hawks, finishing with a game-high 4 blocks to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

The win improves the Sea-Hawks record to 5-1 and pushes them into first place in the AUS standings.

Memorial visits the UPEI Panthers next weekend to close out the first half of the season.  The Sea-Hawks and Panthers tip-off at 8:30pm NST on Saturday evening, followed by a Sunday game at 3:30pm NST.  Both games are available live on AUStv.ca.
